“It’s mind blowing!”

The WinterTest’s third set of heat seekers completed their overnight visit to Stand 47 this weekend…

Designers Kalika and Gerhard Painter, were invited to spent a night at Stand 47 to take part in the Winter Test for a very specific reason. They are planning to build their own home soon and they want to build the best home possible to maximize their investment. So naturally, we wanted them to test how well Stand 47 performs and feels compared to a traditional brick building, given that Stand 47 is all about building better. If you are planning a new build or renovation, you too could spend an all-expenses-paid night in this extraordinary Highveld home in exchange for your #WinterTest feedback.

Stand 47 : What was your first impression of the house and did anything specific catch your attention?

Gerhard : When I saw that house from outside I was impressed, but I became really impressed the moment I walked through the front door. The first thing that caught my attention was all the natural light filtering into and through the living space and the feeling of comfort. Compared to the photos I have seen of the home, my first impression was that it exceeded my expectations. It felt relaxed, comfortable and stylish.

Stand 47 : How does the real thing compare with your expectations?

Gerhard : Nice…above expectation.

Stand 47 : Tell us about a night at Stand 47. Give us details!

Gerhard : Around 9pm on Saturday, the thermometer read 10 degrees outside and 21 degrees inside. It’s mind blowing! We were walking around barefoot and in our T-shirts – in July – in Joburg?! We didn’t feel the need to put on any electrical heating and felt so cosy and comfortable in this house all evening.

Stand 47 : What is your opinion of the home next morning?

Gerhard : Next morning we slept well, surprised by how quiet the house is… quieter than a tradition home both during the day and at night.

Stand 47: Could you describe your favourite aspect of the home?

Gerhard : We really enjoyed the comfortable ambient temperature, as well as the layout and size of rooms. Out of 10, we would give the home a 9 for overall comfort.

Stand 47: And finally, we have to know, would you live here?

Gerhard : We have real admiration for this house and what it has achieved. As designers, we can appreciate how the careful consideration of every material used in its construction created this space that seems to hold you in a snug embrace. It’s just RIGHT – a tough act to beat. Without a doubt, we could so live here!
